Fortunately, Android users have several app alternatives for location sharing with people who use either Android or iOS; in most cases, everyone you want to share your location with will need to install an app. Many of these apps not only show you a device's location, but also its battery level, so when a device disappears you can deduce it was due to a low battery. Many of the apps also offer additional features, such as chat and location history, often for an additional fee. The following location sharing apps are all reasonable options for Android devices, although the feature set, pricing, and sharing features vary significantly. You likely already have a free app that allows you to share your location with friends and family on your phone: Google Maps. Tap the three horizontal lines in the upper left of the Google Maps app to see menu options, including Location Sharing.

Being lost sucks. There really is nothing worse than going to a huge event with a bunch of friends or family and then getting separated. Instead of partying with the bros, you get stuck next to this lame couple who keeps seriously making out every ten seconds.

So, in order to avoid loner status, you can use your smartphone to track and locate your peeps. This app is great, but it will only locate other iPhone users. Some of your friends may not have an iPhone, so they would be SOL. There is also a Find My Friends app for Android, but again, you will only be able to find other Android users.

But, there is one app that can locate your friends no matter what phone they are carrying—even if you know someone who still uses a Blackberry although they will need a Gmail address. It's called Google Latitude , and it's actually been around for quite a while. Google Latitude shares your location with your group just like Find My Friends. You can add friends using your Gmail account and their Gmail address. So, now any one of your friends with a Gmail account can be located no matter what device.

To make it even easier to keep track of your friends, you can utilize the Check In feature, which allows you to give pinpoint location information to all of your friends. Now, you should be aptly equipped to venture off into the wild without ever having to worry about losing your friends. This would have been very useful for this guy. Some people are just never on time. The easiest part is that you can just sign up by connecting a phone number to the app. Once you create a group you can invite others via SMS or email, and they can sign in to your group and control when their virtual light is on for you to see them. Another slick feature: Just touch on a contact and with one tap get directions right to their location with Google Maps. The app also offers an Android Wear version, which is perfect for sending a message or your location to another member of your network.

Four ways to share your exact location with family (and why)

Do you know where your family is? You do now with these handy apps designed to share or track locations using your phone. Peace of mind is priceless.
