Even prior to actually committing the act, once the will has turned towards illicit behavior, sin has already entered the heart and, once fully conceived, will bring forth death. This interpretation is reflected in the following translations:. So the common teaching is that sexual lust is absolutely evil—equivalent, even, to the actual act of sexual sin. The first thing to understand in this passage is that Jesus is in no way intensifying the Law here, nor is he saying anything new.

Ex LXX. In this passage, Jesus reminds his audience that the Law not only prohibits adultery, it prohibits coveting. This is not so much an intensification of the Law as it is a reminder of what the Law already says. And just as the Law itself was intended to be fulfilled, Jesus intends his words here to be followed and that following them is entirely possible.

Another important point is that the command does not forbid recognition of quality or even desire itself such would be nonsense but something else: it forbids the action of coveting hence the verbal form. James 1, where lust leads to sin but is not itself sinful.

In fact, the word simply refers to a strong, passionate desire, used either of sexual desire or of a strong desire for something non-sexual.

For those non-Platonists out there, this requires further explanation. This part is concerned with things like truth and knowledge and the highest aspects of human life. This part is represented in the human body by the head, which is the highest part of the body, stretching towards the heavens. Take food, for example. The desire for food is necessary inasmuch as the body will die without food, but the appetite does not simply restrict itself to what is necessary.

Instead, a person may desire extremely expensive food unnecessary or, in extreme cases, may desire to eat something improper i. Since it is prone to run amok, the appetite part of the soul must be governed by the higher parts of the soul to keep it in check.

That is not the point. Because of bad translation, this verse has caused a lot of needless guilt among Christian men for nearly years. Ever since they stopped reading it in the original Greek. Probably the biggest problem is the omission of Greek words which change the meaning of the passage.

In a recent interview on CNN , Dr. Jerry Fallwell Jr. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus is teaching that the Law not only addresses external sins, but also sins of the heart.

Do we guard our eyes effectively? I remember an incident described by my cousin when we were teenagers. While returning they saw a known uncle coming out of an adult Movie Theatre. These two mischievous creatures went right in front of him and greeted him. The Uncle!

Personally, God brought me to a brick wall some years back with my porn addiction, and showed me that it had had to end, period. It felt like God hit me with a two-by-four, and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that He delivered me. I have not been so successful in the day-to-day comings and goings. It functions just like an addiction. I believe, like David Powlison says, sexual sin is mastered at different levels. We might overcome pornography addiction but then we move to an even deeper battle of how we see women or men in general. It at least shows you care about holiness. Only a heart made alive by the Spirit of God does this.

Ye have heard that it has been said, Thou shalt not commit adultery. Matthew —28, Darby Translation. Pleasure sexual or otherwise is merely the implied ends of lusting, not the means thereof. Why else would someone crave something if not for pleasure of one sort or another? And so it is in the Greek. The word — in Greek and English — is not inherently sexual, so we must not simply assume it.
