Take a Girl like You. Jonathan Miller 1 94min. X Certificate. Review Our Score. Kingsley Amis's novel about a northern girl who teaches in a London grammar school was published in and fed off the s society of frugality and furtive sex. Filmed at the tail end of s, it seemed dated on release, with Hayley Mills valiantly trying to remain virginal despite the best efforts of Labour councillor and landlord John Bird and fellow teacher Oliver Reed, who of course is the art teacher and a bit of a bohemian.

The story concerns a pair of Londoners Oliver Reed and Noel Harrison who attempt to get steamy with a young woman Hayley Mills who delays them with her judiciousness. It's got a good cast and the team behind the camera has an amazing pedigree.

But I've rarely seen a film as inert and witless as this one is. Maybe it might have some camp value but I tend to doubt it. Some films get forgotten for a reason I suppose. Oliver Reed wants to bed innocent ingenue Hayley Mills, but she won't let him. This sex comedy should be smarter given it's based on a Kingsley Amis novel and directed by Jonathan Miller, but it's pretty much a direct relation to Robin Askwith's Confessions series.

Oliver Reed is completely wasted in this! But I loved the twist ending. Also there is a dating montage where Oliver Reed pets a sheep. Not really a romantic comedy as there is not that much romance. This may not be a big disadvantage though as I get the impression from wikipedia that George Melly's screenplay plays fast and loose with the source material.
